Citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that is an important intermediate in the urea cycle, functioning along with Arginine and Ornithine to rid the body of ammonia, a byproduct of protein metabolism. Because Citrulline is a precursor of Arginine, it provides a readily available source material for Arginine production, which inturn, can be used for the production of Nitric oxide (NO). NO plays a fundamental role in vascular function and blood flow. Citrulline therefore, not only supports detoxification pathways, but also supports NO production and a healthy cardiovascular system.
Sports Performance Application
When L-arginine is converted into NO, a portion of this metabolic reaction yields Citrulline, which is then converted back into Arginine. This cycle is known as the L-Arginine/L-Citrulline Recycling Pathway. Supplemental L-Citrulline fuels the NO recycling & supports NO production for extended time periods.
L-Citrulline is used as the "trash collector" for metabolic waste from protein digestion. This is important because if given the choice, naturally occurring L-Citrulline will be used for metabolic cleanup, and not used for NO sustainability. Studies indicate that consuming about 3000 mg of L-Citrulline about 45-minutes pre-training can have a substantial effect on NO, thereby helping to reduce fatigue and lactic acid build up. This translates into much better performance training sessions!
